According to Variety, Amazon is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros to create its own television series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Thanks to the success of HBO’s stellar success in adapting Game of Thrones from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s perhaps understatement to say most streaming networks are now seeking their own slice of the pie – and a new report from Variety indicates that Amazon may be seeking to replicate HBO’s flagship production with a new adaptation of Lord of the Rings.
Variety reports that Amazon is presently in early-stage negotiations with Warner Bros Television and J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate to purchase the rights to a television series – and, according to rumour, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself is involved in talks with both entities.
The news comes after a news report earlier this year that saw Bezos become involved with the creative direction of Amazon Studios with the view of creating high-profile content in the vein of Game of Thrones.
Lord of the Rings is perhaps most synonymous with Peter Jackson’s film series, which first told the eponymous tale in a trilogy of three films prior to the production of a new saga based on Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
It remains unclear as to the direction and nature of the proposed television shows – Lord of the Rings notably cuts a far more light-hearted and hopeful tone than Game of Thrones, and it remains to be seen what works (if any) that Amazon would intend to use to adapt Tolkien’s fictional universe to the silver screen.
