Mark Zuckerberg made two major announcements today – firstly, that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are now parents to a baby girl named Max, and that the couple plans to give away the vast majority of the shares in Facebook to charitable causes.
The new parents, who collectively are worth nearly $45 billion USD, announced their decision through a letter to their daughter.
The donation will work alongside the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which aims to help advance human potential and child equality. The initial areas of focus for both the donation and the foundation will include personalised learning, curing diseases, connecting people and building stronger communities.
“We know this is a small contribution to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.” the couple wrote.
Zuckerberg and Chan both promised that more details on the initiatives would be unveiled in the coming months – including answers to the questions as to why and how the new parents intend to tackle the issues they’ve decided to dedicate their resources to, and how their decision will work alongside Facebook’s other initiatives.
