Xiaomi’s Mi 5X goes official with a budget price tag, dual cameras

Xiaomi has unveiled the budget Mi 5X; a low-cost device that accommodates dual cameras and will soon be upgradeable to MIUI 9.

Xiaomi has managed to carve out a reputation for its feature-rich and wallet-savvy smartphones, and where we had the Xiaomi Mi 5s previously, the company has released the Mi 5X.

Where the Mi 5s was a more iterative refinement upon the elder Xiaomi Mi 5, the Mi 5X ironically takes closer inspiration from the company’s recently announced flagship Mi 6.

If that’s quite enough ‘Mi’ for one day, the good news is that the 5X accommodates a rich offering at an attractive price.

The handset will accommodate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625, 4GB RAM, a large 3,080 mAh battery, and USB Type C support. There’s a headphone jack too, just for good measure.

The Mi 5X’s unique selling point is the presence of a standalone amplifier that is coupled with a ‘DHS Audio Calibration Algorithm’ that promises refined sound through headphones.

The handset will arrive running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, and will be upgradeable to MIUI 9, which is the next release of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin.

The smartphone is expected to ship in Black, Gold, and Rose Gold variants, and will sell for some $222 USD when converted from Yuan.

The move is an interesting one from Xiaomi; whether or not the Mi 5X pays homage to the company’s flagship or not, it does serve as a ‘lite’ variant for those seeking a smartphone on a restrictive budget. We’re awaiting word on whether the device will become available in South Africa.
