Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub has confirmed that the network is seeking to partner with VoD (Video On Demand) services such as Showmax and Netflix to bring content to its subscribers.
Speaking on CNBC Africa, Joosub clarified that Vodacom needs to enter the content market in order to sustain its growth; to do this, the company is looking to partner with brands such as Netflix to give subscribers the ability to purchase viewing hours on VoD services.
In doing so, the company hopes that the offering of VoD content will incentivize an increase in data uptake.
However, Vodacom’s plans are not without precedent; earlier in 2014, Vodafone UK announced that subscribers on the Red 4G plan would be entitled to a free six-month Netflix subscription. Concurrently, Vodacom – part of the Vodacom group – confirmed that it would investigate doing the same in South Africa.
