Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 might arrive in August this year, ahead of the iPhone 8

New reports have indicated that Samsung could opt to release its forthcoming Galaxy Note 8 phablet in August this year to pip the iPhone 8 to the post.

iPhone 8 rumours have fanned anticipation that Apple might finally release a handset with a near borderless display, though any such handset might well have to compete with the emergence of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 phablet which rumours indicate could be released in August this year.

The news paints a parallel to the Galaxy Note 7, which was similarly announced in August of 2016 to pre-empt the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus – though that South Korean champion died an explosive death, ending any market advantage before the games truly began.

According to early reports, the Galaxy Note 8 will debut with a dual-camera array (the first such entry in Samsung’s flagship line) that will accommodate 3x optical zoom.

The handset has further been rumoured to redress one of the Galaxy S8’s flaws, in that the phablet might feature an embedded fingerprint scanner that would sit beneath the device’s display.

Some reports have contradicted this, however – Korean-language publication News1 reports that a Samsung official has been quoted as saying that “We made every effort to install a display-integrated fingerprint sensor on Galaxy Note 8, but we decided not to install it on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.”

The iPhone 8, in comparison, is apparently facing similar difficulties – though some reports have claimed that Apple has actually been successful in embedding a fingerprint scanner beneath a smartphone display.
