Rumour: Apple to acquire tech innovators PrimeSense

According to Israeli publication Calcalist, responsible for publishing the news of the then-pending acquisition of  mapping app Waze, which was officially bought by Google in June, Apple is in acquisition talks with technology company PrimeSense.

Apple’s interest in PrimeSense, the company behind the original Microsoft Kinect’s motion sensing and control system, is reportedly valued between $280 – $300 million. Just to put it into perspective, the company has already received significant investments amounting to about $85 million.

The addition of gesture control to Apple’s TV interface offering is likely to enable it to compete more readily with Xbox and Playstation consoles in the living room, as is anticipated.

Apple has already acquired patents for 3D technology and has reportedly been working on its own gesture-controlled OS (see image below).

However, since the reports have surfaced, while PrimeSense has not denied the rumours outright only declining to comment, a source has told TechCrunch that such talks are untrue and “a journalistic delusion”.

Apple too has refused to comment on the matter.
