Report: Google developing Android gaming console

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google will be developing an Android gaming console and wristwatch in order to expand its Android powered device offering beyond tablets and smartphones.

Last year, Google unveiled the Nexus Q, a web-connected media console that never sold to the public. Now, it appears the upcoming console would be a second version of the Nexus Q.

The report also reveals that the company is aiming to release at least one of the devices this year that it plans to design and market itself.

As far as gaming consoles go, as Google enters into the gaming space it will be competing with heavyweights Sony and Microsoft who recently launched their new PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles respectively, expected to go on sale later this year. As for Apple, the sources reveal Google believes the company is planning a gaming console of its own with the next release of Apple TV and is looking to beat it to the punch.

Other Android powered gaming consoles like OUYA, which has officially gone on sale this week, has also been receiving a lot of attention in recent months.

This is not the first we have heard of a possible smartwatch from Google with the Financial Times first reporting its development by Google’s Android unit back in March. Apple and Samsung smartwatch rumours also continue to surface with Sony having announced its next generation smartwatch just this week.
