Why yes – you can now buy a real, KFC-branded smartphone

KFC and Huawei have teamed up to provide a new smartphone offering replete with Colonel Sanders’ visage on the rear of the handset.

Welcome to 2017! We still don’t have flying cars, but robots now deliver our pizza, your beer case can double as a virtual reality headset, and what do you know – now even KFC has its own smartphone.

The handset – which registers as a variant of the Huawei Y7 – forms part of a new, cross-promotional campaign between Huawei and KFC; both firms opened their doors in 1987, with 2017 marking 30 years of trade in China.

Hence, that’s why Chinese consumers will be able to pick up KFC’s new offering for a mouth-watering ¥1,099 CNY – some $161 USD. For their money, the KFC smartphone offers a Snapdragon 425 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 5″ 720p display – all in addition to a 13-megapixel primary camera.

The handset sports a bespoke design that’s replete with good old Colonel Sanders present on its rear, and includes a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The device will ship with KFC’s smartphone app included with new feature dubbed ‘K Music’, which will let users listen to a curated music playlist when inside a KFC restaurant.

We’ve had some wacky tie-in ideas on our hands before – some as awesome as the Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition, and others as frankly bizarre as KFC’s previous effort in gadgetry, the Watt-a-box.

It remains unlikely that we’ll see the handset on our shores, given the fact that the smartphone celebrates a uniquely Chinese partnership and will be limited to a production run of some 5,000 units.
