Sony might have the monopoly on 4K smartphones, but Dell now look to join the hybrid laptablet segment with the addition of a 4K screened contender; the XPS 12.
In fresh leaks, uncovered by German website WiFuture, the XPS 12 has emerged as a convertible hybrid with specs that will pit it squarely against Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3, or more aptly, the soon-to-be-announced Surface Pro 4.
The XPS 12 will feature a 12.5″ 4K touch display, and will run on an Intel Skylake CPU. Presently, the XPS 12 is rumoured to come in various iterations, spanning between 4-8GBs of RAM, and various SSD capacities. Dell also appears to be intent on stealing Microsoft’s thunder with the Dell Active Stylus – the company’s take on Microsoft’s Surface Pen.
The XPS 12 will apparently feature a wealth of connections for its size, if speculation proves to be true; Dell have prepared their new hybrid with two USB type-C ports, one HDMI out port, and an SD card reader.
The central tablet will slot into a solid keyboard dock with a supportive hinge, rather than the rather tenuous back panel that supports the Surface Pro 3. It is presently unknown whether the keyboard dock will ship alongside the XPS 12, or will be a seperate accessory like Microsoft’s range of Surface Covers.
It is expected that Dell are planning to unveil the XPS 12 at their official Dell World conference, which is set for October 21st and 22nd.
