A new report has revealed that Google may be seeking to purchase ailing giant HTC for the purpose of acquiring its smartphone division.

Google and HTC have long been fast friends; the Taiwanese brand was one of the first champions present in the Android world, and the two companies later collaborated to deliver not only Nexus smartphones, but further the Pixel and Pixel XL.

It’s perhaps unsurprising, then, that given the fact that HTC has stood on a slippery slope these past few years that Google is now considering purchasing either the Taiwanese company or its smartphone division outright.

A new report, courtesy of Commercial Times, reveals that HTC is reportedly in the ‘final stage of negotiation’ with Google, wherein the Taiwanese giant may sell of its smartphone business once and for all.

HTC has staggered through recent years – the Taiwanese manufacturer’s revenue dropped substantially in recent weeks, leaving August to stand as its worst fiscal month in the past thirteen years. The company reported that its revenue fell by 51.5% compared to last month, and is down some 54.3% compared to last year.

The signs of a business-meld have been present for some time; perhaps most visible with the recent news that the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL may sport the same squeezable frame that the HTC U 11 debuted with – despite the fact that both smartphones are reportedly being developed by LG.

Acquiring HTC might be a fast and easy way for Google to ramp up the production of its own smartphones – the Mountain View company has traditionally relied on hardware partnerships between itself and other brands – such as HTC, LG, and Samsung – to bring its own smartphones to market.
