US Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has confirmed that the US Homeland Security team is ‘monitoring’ the rise of cryptocurrencies.
Numerous governments around the world have begun to issue statements or clarity on their position surrounding the rise of cryptocurrencies, yet US President Donald Trump’s administration has remained relatively quiet.
In a new press briefing, however, US Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has confirmed that US Homeland Security is monitoring the use of digital currencies.
Answering a reporter’s query as to whether President Trump had a strong opinion on Bitcoin, Sanders responded, saying:
“I know this is something that is being monitored by our team here. In terms of specific briefings and announcements on it, I don’t have anything that I can share with you right now but would be happy to follow back up with you…Look, this is an issue, I know, that Tom Bossert, with the homeland security team, an advisor to the President, has brought this up in a meeting earlier this week. I know it’s something that he’s keeping an eye on. And we’ll keep you posted when we have anything further on it.”
Bitcoin’s recent price spike – which set the digital currency off to conquer a new all-time high at $11K USD per coin – may well have stirred interest on American soil.
Worldwide, national administrations have begun to issue radically different stances on digital currencies. While Russia has offered that it will heavily regulate cryptocurrencies and ICOs, other nations, such as Taiwan, have expressed their support for the entrepreneurial climate created by digital currencies.
Should the Trump administration be actively monitoring cryptocurrencies, it may not be long before the US government issues greater clarity on the use and regulation of digital currencies within its borders.
