WhatsApp’s new update has added the ability for users to leave colorful text status updates as well as the ability to view status updates on the web.

For once, WhatsApp has introduced a new Status update that doesn’t form part of Facebook’s ongoing campaign to plunder Snapchat’s feature set – rather, the app’s newest abilities stem directly from its parent company.

As of today, WhatsApp users on both iOS and Android have been served a new feature which will enable them to leave colourful, text-driven status updates similar to those seen on Facebook’s core platform; the text-driven status feature now empowers users to share words of wisdom in a multitude of different fonts and background colours.

Though many of us are familar with that one friend who leaves their words of wisdom behind in Status updates, the feature will be more useful going forward as users will be able to include links within their text and further grants enhanced privacy controls.

Comments on a Status update need no longer be confined to text, either – as of today, users can respond to a Status update by sharing a photo, video, or GIF in response.

The update further extends to WhatsApp’s web and desktop clients, which now enables users to see and respond to Status updates directly from the comfort of whichever device they most prefer.

While WhatsApp’s Status feature has been a relative slow-burner, Facebook has found success in cultivating Instagram’s Stories service, which recently surpassed Snapchat with some 250 million active daily users.
