A new feature to land on WhatsApp’s Windows Phone client has revealed that the arrival of WhatsApp for Business could be imminent.
We last reported on Facebook’s plans to launch WhatsApp for Business in March this year, in which we investigated reports that the social media giant was trialling a commerce-oriented variant of the popular instant messaging app in India.
Now, the arrival of a new feature on WhatsApp’s Windows Phone presence has indicated that the app could soon benefit from an update that renders it possible for brands to (officially) register and communicate with customers on the platform.
WABetaInfo reports that Windows Phone users will soon be able to add a check mark next to their name in WhatsApp; and while that might not sound like significant news at first, it is believed that the presence of a check mark will denote a verified business profile for organizations enrolled on the app.
PhoneArena asserts that WhatsApp users will be able to specify whether they wish to receive messages from specific businesses, or opt out of all potential communication with brands and organizations entirely.
On the business side of things, it is believed that organizations will be able to leverage a new app to communicate with potential customers – entitled Small and Medium Businesses.
It is alleged that Small and Medium Businesses will enable organizations to channel their activities through WhatsApp – some applications might include banks indicating the possibility of fraudulent account activity directly to their customers, while another could be the ability of an airline to issue delayed flight information to a customer.
The arrival of business-focussed tools aboard WhatsApp is likely to occur at some point – the news is given fresh impetus thanks to the announcement that WhatsApp itself now services over a billion people worldwide.
