Snapchat has quietly released a new update that brings with it the ability to add voice filters and apply backdrops to captured snaps.

Snapchat has gone on the offensive following the news that Instagram’s Stories feature recently took pole position in the race to acquire 250 million daily active users, and now the latest update to arrive on the platform brings with it a novel feature; voice filters.

Arriving in addition to new features such as the ability to create custom geofilters, voice filters enable users to edit how they sound in a captured video; for example, the app now gives four new presets; a treble-enhancing ‘chipmunk’ filter, a bear for lower tones, robotic modulation, and an ‘alien’ filter for the weird and wacky.

Voice filters provide a new measure of control for those seeking to edit their snaps beyond all recognition, and the feature is now supplemented by a new backdrop feature that enables users to select special effects to lay over their images. By making use of a new Scissors tool, users can highlight sections of snaps to preserve, underneath which graphics can be inserted. The feature launches with five such graphics sets, and it seems clear that more will be added in the near future.

Lastly, Snapchat’s latest update brings with it the ability for any users to add links to their snaps – something that will leave social-savvy businesses rejoicing. By tapping a new Paperclip option, users can append links to their Snaps which will be visible when users swipe up; similar to how links would open through the platform’s Discover feature.
