Soon you’ll never need to leave your house. Can an app that caters to one specific market make it in SA? We find out in our Bottles App Review
At the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, I sat up and listened when I saw an app exclusively catering to the delivery of drinks. Open for deliveries in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, Bottles aims to make it simpler than ever to get your buzz on. In our Bottles App review we tried to find out how simple that is.
The aim behind this app is very simple and that philosophy is maintained in the design of the app itself. You won’t have any trouble finding your way around the app at all.
When you open the app you are greeted with a screen to verify your age (more on that later), then immediately it takes you to a locator screen. The GPS nails down your location on an interface you’ve very likely seen before – think Uber or any other service using Google Maps – and as soon as you confirm the delivery location you are taken to the menu.
You are greeted with the usual list of alcoholic categories, like Beer, Cider, Wine, Spirits and others. Choose your desired item(s) and you’re taken to the payment page. Like other apps of this type, you enter your card details and the payment is loaded on the system. An interesting difference of this delivery service compared to others is that your payment is only made once the delivery is on its way, not when you place the order.
The interface of the app is extremely simple and easy to navigate. On the side menu you have the usual culprits like a profile view, payment details and some general information. More importantly, they make it really easy to contact the customer support centre directly from the app should you have any issues.
In terms of prices, there is a slight mark-up on prices you would see in more traditional stores, but it is very reasonable compared to some food delivery services, for example. You can also split payments with others in your contact list that have installed the app, which is really useful for when you need a top-up at a party. Overall I had a really pleasant experience using the service, but there are some inherent issues that come to mind.
First of all, if you are yearning for a cold beer, it might not be all that cold when it reaches you (depending on where you live). Also, I wonder how long it will be before this kind of service needs to be regulated. There is no way to ensure that the person on the other side of the app is of legal age to buy and consume alcohol, which seems like a big risk for Bottles. Lastly, I would love to have some way of being able to track where the delivery is at any point in time, just to get some idea of what the wait could be. Yes, they promise delivery within 60 minutes, but distance and traffic can have a significant effect on that time period.
Everything taken into account, I am glad this service exists and can take on the likes of Mr. Delivery with more competitive prices and naturally a larger selection of drinks. If you are too lazy or unable to get the drinks you need for a social occasion or simply for yourself after a long day, definitely give Bottles a try.
