Update: BBM app for Android and iOS (not) coming this weekend

Update: The release has been delayed as too many fake BBM apps sprung up on the respective app stores. BlackBerry said they will launch once all IP and malware issues have been sorted out.

BlackBerry’s effort to extend its messaging service beyond its own failed hardware has finally come to fruition. After some awkward false starts, plus a detailed leak, BlackBerry Messenger apps for iOS and Android will soon be available for download at the respective app stores, allowing members of those more popular ecosystems to do what they are doing on other apps already, except now through BlackBerry’s BBM servers.

From Saturday, 21 September the BlackBerry Messenger app will be available on Android, and the very next day it will hit iOS.

Would you consider using BBM on any other device than a BlackBerry?

Don’t really see the use in this as most people with Blackberry has Whatsapp anyway, which I actually prefer above BBM, and is used by most non-BB users.

      • The thing is, with BBM you don’t have to give people your telephone number – so it’s awesome for people that prefer their privacy.

    • So hold on, is it still only available for Android for Samsung phones or for the rest of us as well?

    • Dinny

BBM is far better than Whatsapp for a number of reasons, only reason BB users have whatsapp is to communicate with android and apple but I reckon that whatsapp is going to loose out to BBM. (I hate the “last seen/online” feature on whatsapp and the fact that anyone with your number can see your profile.)

Does not seem the BBM for is ready. Does not work at all. Just crashes my device

Reviews on play store confirm I am not the only one.

Sounds like the author of this article doesn’t like blackberry smartphones…. Brandbash much?

      • Theunis Jansen van Rensburg

And how do you deduce that?

Seriously? Are you the author by any chance? lol
“BlackBerry’s effort to extend its messaging service beyond its own failed hardware”
“allowing members of those more popular ecosystems to do what they are doing on other apps already”

            1. Their hardware has failed, the whole company is failing. They are going to sell off their parts for $4.7 billion. They only retain 2.9% of market share. They lost over $1 billion in the last quarter. So its not my opinion, its fact. 🙂

            2. Doesn’t everyone use messaging apps on other platforms? Not bashing BB, just stating the obvious.

I actually really hoped that BlackBerry could claw their way back, but alas, it wasn’t to be.

When will be the release date for it exzactly?

      • Theunis Jansen van Rensburg

As soon as BB can sort out the security issues on the respective app stores.
