Amidst the furore over the Internet radio statistics currently being spread all over the internet (courtesy of Shaun Dewberry, Ballz Radio and 2OceansVibe), there is comfort in the fact that you can still listen to your “offline” radio stations online as well, and naturally also on your phone.
Even older feature phones have a built-in radio, usually one that works only when you plug in headsets, which normally function as antennae at the same time. Since then, there have been numerous apps that look at the radio side of things, but I hadn’t found one that can give me the radio stations I want, until now.
The simple reason I’ve looked for one, is that sometimes I need to listen to the radio to hear an upcoming interview, or for whatever other reason, but unless it’s a radio station I know, I’ll never find or hear it. It’s also interesting to listen to different radio stations, because as some online radio has pointed out, people are tired of the “same-old, same-old”.
South Africa Radio (built by ISHIP INC) is the only one I’ve found that does this seamlessly and responds very well, at least on Android. I could not find it in the iPhone or BlackBerry stores.
ISHIP INC seems again to be a white labelled app that was coded for another country and then spread out over the globe to each country with local content. (Many South African apps are actually white labelled). We saw this with the AppMonday article on maps for South Africa recently.
As you can see in the screenshots, numerous stations are found in each city, with smaller cities covered as well. Some stations seem duplicated, although the selection remains vast and I’d bet that other than the online radio stations, all the others are covered here.
No headphones needed, streaming was perfect and of course your data gets eaten up, but in a WIFI zone you’re safe. Personally, I now use this app and although there haven’t been many (1,000+) downloads on any of the white-labelled versions worldwide, I’ll gladly be the first to rate it for SA.
Don’t forget to watch for next week’s AppMonday on our very own South African translation apps.
