Apple kills the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, drops iPod Touch prices

    ipod shuffle discontinued

Apple has announced that it has officially discontinued both the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, and has dropped prices on the iPod Touch.

It’s perhaps understatement to say that Apple’s iPod kicked off the consumer electronics revolution that has persisted well into 2017, but the company’s digital music player series – the iPod Shuffle, Nano, and Touch among them – have been unfortunate victims of progress.

iPod sales have declined steadily over the past few years – selling some 54.8 million units in 2008, and only 14.3 million in 2014 – leaving Apple to group the sales of its music players in the “Other Products” category of its earning results.

The news is thus unsurprising, then, that Apple has elected to nix both its iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano models, and has correspondingly dropped the pricing of its iPod Touch models.

For years, the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano have been an accessible gateway for those seeking a quality music player sporting compatibility with iTunes, which was once a relatively uncontested giant in the digital media sales area before the emergence of modern streaming services.

While the iPod isn’t quite dead yet, it is likely that Apple will ship far lower volumes of the product in the years to come. The iPod Touch will now retail for $199 USD for 32GB, while the 128GB model will retail for $299 USD.

The legacy of the product will continue in the form of both Apple’s AirPods and the newly introduced HomePod – two new products that leverage Siri for an enhanced music experience. The retention of the ‘Touch’ model iPod establishes some continuity between the trinity of products, all of which have access to Apple Music.

Such a shame. The iPod Nano still has a place in my heart and my wallet… Even when all my other devices are Android-based. There just isn’t an Android device that comes close to the functionality and compactness of an iPod Nano, and I can buy a great Android phone for the size and price of an iPod touch. Apple will leave my life completely once my Nano goes…

      • I agree fully with your sentiments – I count my first modern ‘gadget’ as a 2nd-gen iPod Shuffle that I still use to this day! It’s sad – but perhaps not surprising – that the age of jukebox software and media players is leaving us behind for good. I can see sense in Apple’s decision to prioritize anything that works with Apple Music, though that doesn’t mean leaving the past behind hurts any less!

        • Well, this is South Africa, so I won’t be taking my S7 Edge with me on runs any time soon. Maybe Google can bring out a Nano-like little player that plays cached/pre-downloaded Google Music playlists… oh wait, that’s what my Lollipop-powered smartwatch is for 🙂

Well, this is South Africa, so I won’t be taking my S7 Edge with me on runs any time soon. I also remember that 1st gen shuffle… many happy kilometers together! Maybe Google can bring out a Nano/Shuffle-like little player that plays cached/pre-downloaded Google Music playlists… oh wait, that’s what my Lollipop-powered smartwatch is for 🙂

          • Haha! You raise a good point – I think an area smartwatches haven’t *really* involved themselves in is music playback – perhaps there’s a door open now to that arena. However, I think it’s more likely we’ll see wireless headphones (like the AirPods) become the norm. I really like the concept of Samsung’s Gear IconX thanks to its built-in storage; it obviates the need to take a smartphone out of the house!
